MacKenzie's Problems on Black Moor

The golf course at Moortown Golf Club was ready for play in 1910 after Fred Lawson-Brown set out to create a Leeds course comparable with Ganton. Alister MacKenzie, then working nearby at Alwoodley, designed the layout across 175 acres acquired from the Bramham Park Estate. An exhibition match between James Braid and Harry Vardon marked its opening.

Moortown spreads across Black Moor, where peaty turf gives the ground a springy feel underfoot. Fairways appear broad, but heather, gorse, silver birch, and rough quickly narrow the useful landing areas. MacKenzie's own account described a course built around strategic problems, asking golfers to accept danger when chasing the best line to the green.

The par-3 10th, Gibraltar, was the first hole MacKenzie constructed. Its green sits on a rocky plateau, creating one of his earliest recognisable architectural statements. The hole reportedly consumed the original budget intended for all 18. Beyond that landmark, seven par 4s stretch beyond 400 yards, so the course continues to reward placement and control rather than relying on one famous moment.
