A Parkland Test Beside the Links

The Old Course at Formby Hall Golf Resort opened in 1996 as a modern parkland layout on England's Golf Coast. Golfbreaks credits the design to Dave Thomas, although the resort's current website does not name the architect. The course was built to championship length, now reaching 7,010 yards from the black tees.

Two returning nines move through mature woodland on mostly level ground. Tree-lined fairways narrow the preferred angles, while links-style pot bunkers acknowledge the celebrated coastal courses nearby. Strong drainage supports year-round play, and USGA specification greens provide a consistent surface across the seasons.

The left-dogleg fifth is one of the main strategic holes, asking for a well-positioned drive before the approach. Later, the short 16th carries across a pond to a green guarded by several bunkers. Multiple tees reduce the course to around 5,200 yards, allowing the same layout to offer a suitable test for golfers with different playing abilities.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Formby Hall suits a Northern England experience that balances leading coastal links with a full-service resort. The Old Course hosted the European Challenge Tour and European Seniors Tour before welcoming PGA EuroPro Tour events, where Tommy Fleetwood won the 2011 Formby Hall Classic. On-site accommodation, dining, spa facilities, and a PGA Academy simplify a longer stay.

Kinfern can place the course between rounds at Formby or Royal Birkdale, giving golfers a contrasting parkland day without leaving England's Golf Coast.
