Around the Ladies' Course

The golf course at Formby Golf Club began with a nine-hole layout when the club was founded in 1884. Willie Park Jr established the original 18-hole links in 1912. James Braid altered it in 1922, Harry Colt followed in 1933, and Donald Steel remodelled the course after coastal erosion in 1980. Those stages remain visible in the layout's varied scale and movement.

The routing makes a broad anti-clockwise circuit around Formby Ladies Golf Club. The opening holes follow the railway before the course turns towards the Irish Sea. Mature pine woods enclose sections of the links, while dunes shape blind shots and uneven lies. This meeting of woodland edge and coastal ground gives Formby a character unlike the more exposed links nearby.

Its championship record includes four Amateur Championships, with José María Olazábal winning during the club's centenary year in 1984. Formby also staged the Curtis Cup in 2004 and later welcomed the PGA Seniors Championship in 2021 and 2022. These events reflect the course's long place in British competitive golf.
