Abercromby's Surrey Heathland Original

The golf course at Worplesdon Golf Club was laid out in 1908 by J. F. Abercromby, with Willie Park Jr responsible for constructing its greens and bunkers. Their work established a course closely tied to the early development of Surrey heathland golf.

The round changes scale around the turn. The 139-yard tenth is followed by consecutive par fives at the 11th and 12th, before the 452-yard par-four 14th brings a demanding two-shot test. The 438-yard closing hole then asks players to finish with length and control still in hand.

Heath and heather give the course its Surrey identity, while the routing moves through quiet, wooded ground. At 6,481 yards from the purple tees, the course remains moderate by modern championship standards. Its changing hole lengths and balanced mix of pars keep the challenge varied without relying on excessive distance.
