A Modern Course Through Mature Woodland

The Marquess Course at Woburn Golf Club opened in June 2000 as the youngest of the venue's three layouts. Peter Alliss and Clive Clark worked with Ross McMurray of European Golf Design and Alex Hay on the design. Its name honours the then Marquess of Tavistock, linking a modern course to the Woburn estate's long family history.

The course crosses the Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire boundary within 200 acres of mixed woodland. Rolling ground moves between pine, spruce, sweet chestnut, oak, and other mature trees. Its fairways are wider than those on Woburn's older courses, yet the correct position from the tee remains important. Crests, ravines, bunkering, and large greens shape the next decision.

The par-4 third doglegs over rising ground, with two bunkers sitting well short of the green and affecting distance judgement. At the par-5 fifteenth, the elevated back tee opens a broad view before the approach climbs towards a difficult green. The closing holes then build a stern finish rather than easing players home.

Playing the Marquess adds proven tournament pedigree to an England golf experience. It staged Woburn's first major championship when the Ricoh Women's British Open arrived in 2016, then welcomed the event again as the AIG Women's British Open in 2019. It also served as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open from 2014 to 2017.
