Scottish Shotmaking on Surrey Heath

The Old Course at Walton Heath Golf Club opened on 14 May 1904, with Vardon, Braid, and Taylor taking part in the opening. Herbert Fowler shaped the course across broad Surrey heathland, creating a layout where position and shot choice remain central.

Fowler expected players to use a wide range of shots. The course's greater length can call for low, running approaches, while firm, springy fairways place a premium on judging bounce and release. Heather guards the playing corridors, and the large greens are known for firm, fast surfaces that reward precise distance control.

James Braid became the club's first professional in 1904 and remained in the role until his death in 1950. His long association adds another layer to the course's heritage, linking Walton Heath with one of golf's great champions during the formative years of its reputation.
