Across Ravines Above London

The golf course at The Addington Golf Club officially opened on 18 October 1919 after the First World War delayed its completion. J. F. Abercromby remained chairman until 1935 and continued refining the layout. The club later became the headquarters of Fowler, Abercromby, Simpson & Croome, while a second course opened across Shirley Church Road in 1923 before being lost to post-war housing.

Across the surviving course, blind tee shots, broad greens, and light bunkering sit among steep, broken ground. The 13th is a long par three played over ravine-cut terrain, while the downhill par-five 16th opens towards far-reaching views. From the higher tees, London's towers appear beyond the trees, giving the round a setting unlike the Surrey heathlands farther west.

Clayton, DeVries & Pont began a long-term restoration in 2020. Extensive tree clearance has reopened playing corridors, and work on bunkers and green complexes is recovering more of the original scale and strategic width.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

The Addington brings a striking Golden Age round to a London stay without sending golfers deep into the Home Counties. Its par of 69 keeps the card compact, but the terrain and angled approaches demand a full range of shots.

Kinfern can pair it with Royal Wimbledon for two contrasting courses close to the capital, or use it as the eastern starting point for a wider Surrey itinerary. The club's visitor arrangements and traditional setting give the day a more private feel.
