The New Course's Athletic Test

The New Course at Sunningdale Golf Club opened in 1923 after rising membership and easier motor travel placed greater demand on the Old Course. Former club secretary Harry Colt designed a second layout with a more rugged feel, using narrow, winding fairways bordered by heather to lead towards small, often raised greens.

Its middle stretch changed considerably during the 1930s. Members criticised the steep climbing across the original 6th to 10th holes, prompting Tom Simpson to propose a replacement loop in 1934. When that version proved unpopular, Colt and John Morrison reassessed it in 1939. Their work reversed the loop, created the 6th dogleg, and helped establish the routing that remains.

The course rewards confident driving but rarely offers an easy target. The par-three 5th combines an elevated setting with views over the treetops towards Chobham Common, while later holes continue across open, heathery ground. Its blend of physical challenge, exposed carries, and restrained bunkering gives it a character distinct from its older neighbour.
