Colt's Heathland Above the Valleys

The golf course at St. George's Hill Golf Club was ready for play in October 1913, after developer W. G. Tarrant commissioned Harry Colt to design it for a new residential and sporting estate. The opening competition included leading professionals such as J. H. Taylor and James Braid, with George Duncan winning after a round of 71.

Today, the Red and Blue nines form the ranked course. The Red follows the estate's natural contours, mixing shorter strategic holes with demanding longer tests. The Blue becomes more exacting from the 13th, where golfers meet a par three of more than 200 yards, the course's longest par five, and several par fours extending beyond 400 yards.

The clubhouse occupies the highest point of the property, overlooking the opening and closing holes. Below it, elevated tees reveal broad sandy valleys, heather, and pine-lined playing corridors. Restoration work led by Tim Lobb has returned selected greens and bunkers closer to Colt's original strategy while retaining the course's established character.
