Colt's Quiet Course Inside London

The golf course at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club occupies 240 acres of former Warren Farm beside Wimbledon Common. The club moved from the shared common course to this private ground in 1907, where Willie Park Jr. created the first layout. Member Harry Colt later carried out a radical redesign, formally opened in 1924, whose main structure still shapes the round.

Tight, undulating fairways run among mature oak, chestnut, and silver birch, with heather and gorse narrowing the preferred lines. The opening hole sets the tone with a dogleg shaped by bunkers, out-of-bounds ground, and an approach demanding two strong shots. Colt's green sites keep accuracy important even when the course offers room from the tee.

The 12th is the hardest hole, a 452-yard par four where the safest approach can use the ground from the left. The short 17th provides a different challenge, climbing into the prevailing wind towards a severely sloping, well-defended green. Together, they show why control matters more than simple power at Royal Wimbledon.
