Architects Across the Sand Belt

The golf course at North Hants Golf Club opened in 1904 as part of an ambitious country-club project intended to attract members from London. James Braid produced the original layout, Harry Colt extensively reshaped it in 1913, and Tom Simpson made further changes in 1930. Donald Steel added three new holes in 2001, while Tom Mackenzie later redesigned the par-five third so it could be divided when required.

The course lies at Fleet on the western edge of the sand belt running through Surrey, Berkshire, and Hampshire. Firm, free-draining ground carries the routing through avenues of pine and silver birch, with heather and gorse close to many playing lines. Fairways are generous in places, yet the best angle into the protected greens often depends on choosing the correct side from the tee.

The Hampshire Hog has been central to the club's identity since 1957. Justin Rose won it in 1995 as a 14-year-old junior member, setting a two-round record of 134 and an afternoon course record of 65. The event's list of winners also includes Michael Bonallack and Sandy Lyle, linking the course with generations of leading amateur golf.
