Through Hindhead's Ice Age Valleys

The golf course at Hindhead Golf Club began in 1904 as a 12-hole layout created under the eye of five-time Open champion J. H. Taylor. The full 18 opened the following year with a match between Taylor and James Braid. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, one of the club's founders, served as its first president.
The outward half drops through heather-lined Ice Age valleys, where steep changes in height create bold sightlines. The 2nd tee reveals a fairway far below, while the par-three 6th plays across a deep hollow to a green cut into the slope. Pine trees frame the holes without hiding the sandy heathland beneath them.

The inward half moves onto higher plateau ground and asks for more measured positioning. The 17th brings a sloping fairway into play before the course returns towards the clubhouse. Hindhead also hosted Open Championship Regional Qualifying from 2000 to 2005, adding competitive weight to a layout known for its setting and renowned greens.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Hindhead adds a more dramatic form of heathland golf to an itinerary built around Surrey's better-known sand-belt courses. Its location allows Kinfern to pair it with Hankley Common or Liphook while keeping transfers manageable from the London area.

The contrast between deep valleys and higher heath gives the round a character of its own, even within a region rich in inland golf. It suits groups seeking a highly ranked course with architectural history and a quieter club atmosphere framed by natural scenery.
