Colt's Loop Across the Common

The golf course at Hankley Common Golf Club officially opened in 1897 as a nine-hole layout by local golfer Edward Turle. James Braid visited in 1921 and planned its extension to 18 holes, with the new holes opening between 1923 and 1924. Harry Colt later lengthened the course and added the present 10th, 11th, and 12th holes, which opened in 1935.
The routing crosses a broad Surrey common where free-draining ground supports firm playing conditions, thick heather, and Scots pine. Its scale is striking: the course occupies 164 acres within more than 850 acres owned by the club. That space gives many holes a wide outlook, although shots drifting from the intended line can quickly find heather or bunkers.
Long par fours bookend the round. Between them, changes in elevation and direction keep the open landscape varied. The seventh and 11th are demanding par threes, while the closing hole measures 467 yards from the back tees. Recent work by Mackenzie & Ebert has renewed the bunkering while keeping the established routing intact.
