The Narrow Ground Beside the Bay

The Jubilee Course at St Andrews Links began in 1897 as a 12-hole layout created by John Angus Jr. for less experienced players. It opened on 22 June, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and took its name from the occasion.

The course soon outgrew that modest purpose. It reached 18 holes around the turn of the century, received further changes from Willie Auchterlonie in 1946, and was comprehensively rebuilt by Donald Steel in 1988 to provide a championship-standard test.

Its ground is unusually confined, lying between the New Course and St Andrews Bay. There are no shared fairways or double greens, yet the routing keeps the traditional outward-and-homeward movement of the older links.

Low dunes narrow the view from several tees, while elevated starting points reveal the bay on one side and the wider Links on the other. Tight driving lines, firm turf, pot bunkers, and exposed greens place control ahead of brute strength.

The result is a course far removed from its beginner-course origins. Its varied par threes and demanding coastal rhythm have also made it a venue for significant amateur championships.
