The High Ground Beyond the Links

The Craigtoun Course at St Andrews Links began life in 1995 as The Duke's, created by Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett on former estate farmland above the town. Its elevated setting immediately separated it from the flatter coastal courses below.

Tim Liddy's 2006 redesign changed far more than the bunkering. Five new holes entered the routing, the closing sequence was rebuilt, and the hazards gained the broad, rugged appearance associated with Australia's Sandbelt courses.

The course now moves through pines, gorse, heather, and bracken, with rolling fairways and large greens making position central to the round. Its height opens wide views towards St Andrews Bay, yet the trees and changes in level often make individual holes feel enclosed.

Management passed to St Andrews Links Trust in January 2026, when the course adopted the Craigtoun name. The change brought it into the same portfolio as the Old Course while preserving its most important distinction: this is St Andrews golf shaped by inland ground, rather than dunes and shoreline.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Craigtoun offers something no other St Andrews Links course can: a full heathland round within the Home of Golf portfolio. Five teeing options allow groups to choose a suitable challenge, while the varied elevation and sheltered sections create a different rhythm from the exposed coastal courses.

The practice facilities, clubhouse, and views across the town make it easy to give the round its own place in an itinerary. Kinfern can include Craigtoun for golfers who want broader variety without changing their St Andrews base.
