The golf course at Tain Golf Club opened in 1890 with 15 holes, the most Old Tom Morris believed the available land could support. The club, originally called St Duthus Golf Club, acquired more ground and expanded to a full 18 holes in 1894.

Its unusual beginning suits a course whose identity comes from variety rather than one uniform landscape. Undulating links ground, gorse, and pockets of heather sit between the Dornoch Firth and inland hills, so the views and wind exposure change as the routing turns.

The 11th, Alps, provides its clearest historic-style challenge. A straight drive leaves a blind second shot over a line of hillocks to a long, narrow green, asking the golfer to trust distance and direction without seeing the full target.

Tain's par-70 card avoids a predictable rhythm. Short and long holes are mixed across firm, uneven ground, while the River Tain becomes a factor late in the round. Placement, contours, and changing conditions matter more here than length alone.
