Nairn's Evolving Championship Links

The Championship Course at Nairn Golf Club began in 1887, when Andrew Simpson laid out the first course on shoreline ground west of the town. Old Tom Morris extended it towards the present bothy and icehouse in 1890, opening more of the coastal land that still shapes the round.

Further changes arrived in stages rather than through one complete redesign. James Braid visited several times between 1909 and 1926, reshaping important parts of the routing. Ben Sayers also contributed during the course's development, adding another layer to its architectural history.

In 2018, Mackenzie & Ebert began a modernisation informed by the club's archives. Greens, approaches, bunkers, and tees were revised while preserving the established links identity.

Today, the course follows an out-and-back route beside the Moray Firth. The sea remains visible from every hole, while firm coastal ground and repeated changes of direction keep wind and positioning central to the round.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Nairn brings proven championship stature to a Kinfern golf experience without losing the feel of a traditional Highland club. It is one of only nine venues to have hosted the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, The Amateur, and Women's Amateur, giving the round a history recognised well beyond Scotland.

Kinfern can tailor its place within the wider experience around group ability, preferred pace, and available time. For golfers who value tournament heritage, coastal scenery, and genuine strategic variety, Nairn offers a memorable centrepiece rather than simply another round.
