The Burn Through Culcabock

The golf course at Inverness Golf Club dates to 1883, with George Smith and J. J. Fraser responsible for the early design. James Braid later advised on changes in 1921 and again in 1937, leaving a course shaped through several periods rather than one single plan.

Its Culcabock setting gives Inverness a compact parkland character close to the city centre. Mature trees define much of the playing ground, while the Mill Burn returns at several points instead of appearing as one isolated hazard. Its repeated presence makes distance control and the angle of approach important throughout the round.

The scorecard has an unusual balance, with five par threes and only two par fives. This interrupts the expected rhythm of a parkland course and keeps club selection changing across the card. Elevated ground around the 12th also opens views across the city towards Kessock Bridge and the Black Isle.

The closing stretch restores a stronger sense of scale. Longer par fours ask for committed shots late in the round, giving Inverness a firmer finish than its central location and modest overall length might suggest.
