Braid's Plan Beside the Sea

The golf course at Brora Golf Club began as nine holes after the club's founding in 1891. John Sutherland later extended it to 18, J.H. Taylor made further changes, and James Braid was commissioned to redesign the course in 1923. His plan remains largely intact.

Except for the short 6th, the outward nine follow the curve of Kintradwell Bay. The sea stays in view across open, gently rolling ground, with the Sutherland foothills forming the inland backdrop. Bent grass, beach sand, burns, and seasonal gorse give the links its natural texture.

The inward half runs beside neighbouring croftland, where the boundary fence and out-of-bounds line tighten the driving task. A railway also enters consideration from the 10th tee.

The 13th, named Snake, turns back towards the sea across burn-cut ground. Brora then finishes with a 201-yard par three, requiring a carry over a deep hollow to a bunkered green beneath the clubhouse windows.
