Compact Golf Across Highland Slopes

The golf course at Boat of Garten Golf & Tennis Club took its present 18-hole form in 1932. James Braid had been asked in 1930 to expand the club's original nine-hole layout, creating a compact Highland course whose challenge comes from shape, slopes, and position rather than length.

The fairways climb and fall through heather, whin, pine, and birch, often leaving uneven stances on firm summer ground. Small targets place a premium on controlled approaches. To the west, the Strathspey Railway passes the course, while the River Spey lies beyond its eastern edge and the Cairngorms rise to the south.

Boat of Garten opens unusually with a par three. Its best-known strategic test arrives at the par-four 6th, Avenue, where the fairway turns right between trees and a cautious tee shot leaves a demanding approach to a hogback green. The course remains short by modern standards, yet tight lines and lively ground keep scoring uncertain.
