The Bunkers That Define Hotchkin

The Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa Golf Club opened in 1905 from Harry Vardon's original design. Harry Colt altered the layout before the First World War, and S.V. Hotchkin carried out the major 1920s redesign that gave the course much of its present identity.

The course sits on sandy ground north of Woodhall Spa, with firm fairways running between heather and gorse, alongside areas of pine woodland. Its deepest bunkers are a constant part of the strategy. Some sit below the player's line of sight, so position from the tee matters before the approach is even considered.

Tom Doak led a three-year renovation completed in 2019. The work restored heathland character, rebuilt or returned many bunkers, reopened lost sightlines, and brought greens closer to their earlier dimensions. Three greens were also moved and reshaped. The result keeps the stern character associated with Hotchkin while allowing the natural ground and original design ideas to read more clearly.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Woodhall Spa offers a strong sense of English golf beyond the round itself. The venue became the English Golf Union's headquarters in 1995 and is now home to the National Golf Centre. Its second layout, the Bracken Course, provides a contrasting round without changing accommodation or making another long transfer.

Kinfern can build both courses into an English Midlands stay, giving golfers one established heathland challenge and another option at the same respected Lincolnshire venue.
