Colt and Braid Across Sherwood Heath

The golf course at Sherwood Forest Golf Club opened at Eakring Road in 1912 after the club moved from Ravensdale. Harry Colt designed the new layout, and James Braid revised it during the mid-1920s. Later recommendations from Henry Cotton, Frank Pennink, Donald Steel, and Fred Hawtree led to larger greens and new tees in the early 1980s.

The outward holes retain a broader heathland feel, while the back nine runs through pines, silver birch, and oak, with each hole more enclosed from the next. The course contains no modern water hazards. Instead, ninety-eight bunkers filled with local sand and long carries over heather provide its main defence.

Sherwood Forest is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because it contains the Midlands' largest area of low-lying heathland. Firm ground, renowned putting surfaces, and a demanding inward half keep the test rooted in its landscape rather than added features.
