Between the Rails and Sea

The golf course at Sheringham Golf Club began as a nine-hole Tom Dunn design after the club was founded in 1891 on land donated by the Upcher family. Seven years later, it became an 18-hole course. The routing occupies a narrow clifftop strip within the Norfolk Coast National Landscape, with the North Sea along one side and the North Norfolk Railway marking the inland edge.

Several holes run close to the exposed coastline, where the wind and the ground's movement can change the preferred shot. The railway remains part of the experience on the inner side, with passing steam trains forming a moving backdrop rather than scenery held at a distance.

Sheringham's history is closely tied to women's championship golf. Joyce Wethered won the 1920 English Women's Championship here, and the 17th remains known as "What Train" after her response when asked whether a passing locomotive had distracted her. The club is also working through a long-term development plan with Martin Ebert, with initial changes completed at the 14th and 16th.
