Brancaster Between Bay and Marsh

The golf course at Royal West Norfolk Golf Club opened in 1892 on a narrow strip of linksland between Brancaster Bay and the salt marshes. Holcombe Ingleby laid out the course, which has changed little in broad character since its early years.

The routing follows a traditional out-and-back pattern. The prevailing wind often assists players on the outward half before turning the return into a sterner test. Firm turf encourages running approaches, while fast greens and natural contours reward careful control rather than high, stopping shots.

The par-five eighth and par-four ninth show how closely the course belongs to its setting. Their playing character changes with the tide, and water can become a direct part of the challenge. Beyond these holes, the course moves through low dunes with wide coastal views and an unusual sense of isolation.

Its modest yardage can look inviting on paper, but exposed ground and shifting wind keep club selection uncertain. Royal West Norfolk remains a course where the day's conditions shape the round as strongly as the scorecard.
