A Norfolk Course of Many Hands

The golf course at Hunstanton Golf Club began in 1891, when Hamon le Strange funded nine holes designed by George Fernie. James Braid revised the original work and extended the layout to 18 holes in 1907. James Sherlock made later changes during the 1920s, while Ken Cotton updated the closing pair in 1951. More recent work has followed a Martin Hawtree master plan.

The course occupies a narrow strip of linksland between the River Hun and The Wash. Its largely out-and-back routing is broken by short holes that turn across the central dunes, creating shifts in direction before the longer homeward stretch. Rippling fairways and firm greens keep the ground game in play, while coastal wind can alter the effective length from one round to the next.

The inward nine carries the sterner reputation. Golfers meet more demanding holes as the route returns towards the clubhouse, and the green complexes remain a central defence. Hunstanton has also hosted leading amateur events, including the Ladies' British Amateur Championship in 1913 and 1972.
