A Maritime Heathland Reworked for Today

The Championship Course at Aldeburgh Golf Club began on the same Suffolk heathland occupied by the club since 1884. John Thomson and Willie Fernie laid out the original course. After land south of the road was lost in 1907, Willie Park Jr reshaped the layout, and J.H. Taylor added sweeping, grass-banked bunkers that remain visible today.

Harry Colt and Hugh Alison changed the finish in 1922. Later work by Ken Moodie kept the challenge relevant. The sandy base gives firm playing conditions, while gorse and views across the Alde estuary lend the course its maritime character despite its position back from the North Sea.

A major Mackenzie & Ebert redevelopment officially opened in September 2025. It introduced four newly created front-nine holes and the first two men's par fives in the club's history. The routing now sits farther from the road, with fresh views towards the river, clubhouse, and sea.

Aldeburgh offers a club history few English venues can match. From its earliest years, women held equal membership and playing rights, shaped by the influence of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Millicent Fawcett. The club later hosted the English Ladies Championship in 2003 and the English Senior Amateur Championship in 2012.
